Frequently Asked Questions

AT BARE, WE PRACTICE THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF SANITATION
WHICH MEANS NO DOUBLE DIPPING! EVER!

While double dipping (using the same stick over and over re-dipping it into the wax) is common practice in many salons, this can contaminate an entire wax container which is a serious health risk. NO worries here! We Take pride in the cleanliness of our spa. We hope you notice how hard we work to keep you safe.

The bare facts

Who can wax?

Waxing is recommended for males and females alike. There are no true age limits for waxing. Youthful hair is finer and will be less painful to remove typically. We do require a parental signature for anyone under 18 years of age.

How do I prepare for my wax?

As long as your hair is the proper length (about the length of a grain of rice or about 1/4-1/2 inch), there is no preparation needed. If your hair is longer than ½ an inch, we recommend that you trim the hair before you arrive.

As a courtesy to our staff, we ask that you please arrive on time and clean. Our staff will walk you through everything you need to know and be happy to answer any questions you have.

How often should I wax?

While each person’s hair grows at different rates and vary per season, for best results, we recommend a regular schedule of every 4 to 5 weeks.

Particularly for women

Does it matter what time of month it is? Well, yes…..sort of. Just like our emotions, our bodies are the most sensitive around the time of your menstrual cycle. This can make waxing feel more painful. However, you can still wax if you are on your period. We do ask that you come prepared by wearing a tampon.

Exfoliation

While the skin on the face is generally exfoliated enough in terms of waxing, the body needs a little help. A somewhat gritty body scrub (we offer Image Skincare Body Scrub) will help rid dead cells around skin pores and hair follicles, providing an easier exit. Shower and lightly exfoliate your entire bikini area the day before your appointment using warm, not hot water. Make sure you are extra clean.

For your convenience, we also recommend and offer PFB Vanish for pre and post care exfoliation.

Pain Preventers

Please, no caffeine before your wax… especially for Brazilians as it enhances your pain receptors. Take an Ibuprofen or Advil 30-45 minutes before your appointment if you are worried about pain.

The sensation of pain during waxing only lasts a couple of seconds and then immediately goes away. We are confident that you can make it through and your esthetician will be there to support you through the entire process.

Remember, the first time you are waxed will be the hardest but it DOES get easier. Everyone is different but the more you wax, eventually it becomes virtually painless. The first time a client comes in, typically, they are nervous, which causes tension, resulting in more intense emotions…even that of pain. There are several common reactions, like uncontrollable laughter, tears, even “Brazilian Tourette’s Syndrome”, as Paula likes to call it. But after the first visit is over, this uncomfortable feeling should lessen. You’ll see that we are on your side. Our staff does everything we can to help calm your nerves and walk you through the entire process.

Reduce Acidity

Smoking and regular caffeine and alcohol consumption creates a lot of acid in the body’s system.

*Drink water to hydrate your body and skin.

*You might benefit from taking something like Tums 20 minutes before your service to reduce acidity and therefore reduce skin’s sensitivity.

*Don’t drink a lot of caffeine or alcohol. While having a glass of wine or beer before getting waxed sounds like a great idea, stimulants in the system can cause skin to be extra sensitive to waxing. Save the drinks for after.

*Give yourself a couple of hours after drinking coffee or alcohol before getting waxed.

Waxing at Home

Oh, the stories we hear…

Trust us, if you have ever watched any videos or read any blogs about waxing horror stories, they could all be inserted here. It sounds like a good idea at first, but it’s hard to do on yourself, and will really hurt if you don’t know what you’re doing. Leave it to our licensed pros.

Regrowth

You will notice that waxed areas will have finer, thinner hair return due to a weakening of the follicle. BONUS!

Because hair growths in different cycles, sometimes the very first wax may result in some stubble growth after only couple of days especially if you have been a shaver. Please, do yourself a favor and do not shave to remove this hair. It will grow back quickly and you will not experience the true benefits of waxing. This regrowth is not the hair that was just waxed but the hair that was already growing under the surface of the skin and/or too short to be grabbed by wax. While it’s usually only a small amount of hair, for more smooth results, we recommend that you wax twice before an event or vacation. The second time, the hair will be waxed during the same point of the growth cycles and there will be less regrowth. WIN! WIN!

Waxing vs Shaving

Let’s be honest, aren’t you sick of shaving? You don’t have the time to shave as often as needed or suffering from skin irritations caused by shaving? Well, you’ve come to the right place. It’s time you start waxing!

After the Wax

Here are some tips to follow during the first 24-48 hours after waxing
  • Do not expose treated area to ultra-violet rays indoor or outdoor. For your own protection always wear sunscreen
  • Avoid makeup, if your face was waxed
  • Resist touching freshly waxed skin, especially on the face, back and private area as this may encourage irritation and some breakouts
  • Deodorant with aluminum
  • Salt Glow or stimulating body or facial treatments
  • Do not use any exfoliating products, especially ones containing acids, since they might further irritate your skin
  • Showers are better than baths. Use only lukewarm water-not hot
  • No saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools or other heated sources
  • To avoid ingrown hairs don’t wear tight clothes for the next couple of days
  • Sexual activity should be avoided
  • Avoid ingrown hairs by exfoliating waxed area 48 hours after your treatment. This helps your hair grow above skin surface and not become ingrown.

*Applying an ingrown hair solution like PFB vanish will help maintain smooth skin.

After your first wax, you may experience some sensitivity like redness or irritation in the area that was treated. While this is rare, it can happen. Usually, there is less reaction the longer you wax. If you have very sensitive skin or redness we will likely recommend the use of PFB Bikini Mask. If you are ever concerned or experience discomfort, please contact our spa and we can walk you through a solution. We are here for you!

Ingrown Hairs

While not everyone will experience ingrown hairs, they are a possibility and due to the hair follicle not being strong enough to penetrate the skin. The hair will therefore curl up under the skin. We recommend PFB Vanish to our clients who have issues with ingrown hairs. Click on our PFB Link down below ( Also See “Exfoliate” and “After the Wax”)

Bumps or Pustules

While VERY rare, sensitive clients may experience a reactionary stage causing the follicle to become overstimulated, thus creating the bump or pustule after waxing which occurs due to trauma to the sebaceous gland. This normally only occurs after the first and/or second waxing experience. Post care with a body scrub at each shower or PFB Vanish will eliminate the bumps and prepare the skin for continued waxing services.

Waxing No-No's

There are some contraindications for waxing.

For the face area, we can’t wax you if you have been using any retinol products…Retin A, Renovo, Differin, etc. These products thin the skin which makes waxing a bad idea. If you aren’t sure if your facial products include these products, please inform us and we can use a hard wax instead of a soft was for your safety.

If you have been using Accutane or any topical or oral steroid, we can’t wax you anywhere. You need to be off this medication for at least a year.

Sunburn? Recent laser resurfacing? Recent chemical peel? For your safety, we will not be able to wax you in these cases.
